Cynthia Zhang

Biography

Cynthia Zhang (b. 1992, China) is a contemporary abstract artist and writer living and working between Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Her practice explores vitality, perception, nature, and transformation through painting.
Working with atmospheric colour fields, fluid gestures, and layered material relationships, Zhang creates abstract spaces in which forms emerge, dissolve, and remain open to perception. Her practice is informed by sustained observation of nature, Eastern philosophy, and meditation.
She is the founder of ABYSS, an evolving artistic-philosophical framework developed through painting, writing, and visual research. In 2026, Zhang presented her solo exhibition Vitality and Love in Shanghai. Her work has also been presented through international projects and is held in institutional and private collections.

Project Statement

My painting practice explores vitality, perception, nature, and the continuous process of becoming. I work primarily through abstraction, using deep fields of black, blue, and crimson, fluid gestures, layered colour, and shifting material relationships to create spaces in which forms seem to emerge, dissolve, and reorganise.
I rarely begin with a fixed image. Painting develops through an intuitive dialogue with material, movement, and time. I respond to what appears on the surface, allowing unexpected forms and relationships to redirect the work. A flower, a wave, a body, a landscape, or an unknown presence may become perceptible without ever becoming fully defined.
Darkness is an important visual language within my practice. I do not approach it as emptiness, but as a space of depth and possibility—a field from which colour, light, and life can emerge.
These ideas have gradually developed into ABYSS, an evolving artistic philosophy emerging through the relationship between painting, perception, lived experience, and the world. Rather than functioning as a fixed theory, ABYSS remains open and continually changes through practice.
For me, painting is not simply a way of representing the world. It is a way of entering into its processes of change. Each work becomes an encounter between material and intuition, visibility and uncertainty, the artist and the viewer. Meaning remains unfinished, continuing to emerge through perception.
