Anita Markevica

Biography

Anita Markeviča (born in 1974 in Riga, Latvia) is a Latvian painter whose artistic practice is grounded in academic training and a long-standing interest in the relationship between people, nature, and their surroundings. She studied at the Riga School of Design and Art and later at the Art Academy of Latvia, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Art Restoration and a Master’s degree in Fine Arts.
Since 2020, Markeviča has actively participated in painting exhibitions and competitions in Latvia. Her work encompasses painting and portraiture, with a particular focus on the character of people and places, as well as the changing presence of nature and everyday life.

Project Statement

In my work, I explore the poetics of everyday moments and the quiet connection between humanity and nature. I am particularly drawn to the changing seasons, the fleeting moods of the natural world, and the traces of time found in familiar places and everyday objects.
Autumn holds a special place in my creative practice; I am fascinated by its colors, its light, and the sense of transformation it brings. This transition between presence and disappearance often serves as a metaphor for memory, the passage of time, and the fragility of life.
Whether painting a landscape, a still life, or a portrait, I am interested in the feeling that lingers beyond the visible image—an ephemeral moment that might otherwise easily slip away.
