Biography
Matthew Morpheus (Serhii Matveichenko) is a Ukrainian conceptual artist based in the United Kingdom. Working across digital collage, painting, drawing, and installation, his practice explores political mythology, power structures, collective memory, and the construction of reality in contemporary media culture.
Drawing on experiences of living in Ukraine, Israel, Germany, and the UK, Morpheus creates layered visual narratives that combine symbolism, fragmentation, and social commentary. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Osten Biennial of Drawing (North Macedonia) and CICA Museum (South Korea)
His artworks investigate the intersection of ideology, identity, and visual propaganda, using collage as a tool for deconstructing dominant narratives and revealing hidden cultural tensions.
Project Statement
In this series I work exclusively with gel roller pens on paper, creating dense, intricate black-and-white or color compositions. Through obsessive line work and hypnotic organic patterns, I explore inner spiritual journeys, mythological archetypes, the battle with inner demons, and the search for personal freedom.
These drawings reflect my long-standing fascination with the meditative and expressive potential of simple drawing tools.
